Richard's indicator is a steam locomotive pressure indicator. A locomotive pressure indicator is an instrument designed to show the pressure of steam at any point along the piston stroke. This is achieved in the following way: A pencil moved up and down draws a line on a piece of paper, which has a back and forth movement coinciding with that of the piston. The main innovation of Richard's indicator involved the parallel motion amplification mechanism, which ensured that the pencil drawing the diagram would move in a straight line. The Richards' indicator delighted observers at the exhibition as it produced perfect diagrams at unprecedented (for the time) speed Richards' indicators had improved recording parts in the form of two thin arms as opposed to the one weak arm of other indicators.
