Speech by General Étienne Turr in honor of Ferdinand de Lesseps, representative of the Company that undertook the opening of the Corinth Canal, 7.7.1879
-
Description
-
The Hungarian architect-engineer General Turr describes his first meeting (1854) with the French diplomat Lesseps, who had completed the opening of the Suez Canal, the latter's vision and passion, but also the completion of the project in a relatively short period of time despite the ominous predictions of some influential figures of the time, such as Stratford Canning. He then expresses his admiration for Lesseps and describes his contribution to the project of opening the Panama Canal, initially in terms of advice and encouragement and later as the head of the project.
