The Report for the year 1881, submitted by the governor of the National Bank, Marcos Renieris, to the General Meeting of Shareholders on February 12, 1882. On page 8, he refers to the company for the cutting of the Isthmus of Corinth, which was established “by a group of capital-holders on the initiative of men already participating in major enterprises of the same kind, which received the moral support of Mr. Lesseps”. He also mentions the capital allocated by the National Bank and the reasons for its participation: “Reliable calculations guarantee the success of this company, in which our Council, taking into account both the safety and the national benefit of the project, approved its participation with a capital of 500,000 francs, on the basis of the April 15, 1882, N.D. [Royal Decree] validating the decision of your assembly, by which participation in companies is added to our work, the purpose of which is the development of our transportation.” Historical Archive of the National Bank
